Malacañang on Thursday asked tourists to follow rules as it slammed the action of a foreign tourist who allegedly let her child defecate near the shoreline of world-famous Boracay island.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said they would advise foreigners to comply with local rules and regulations in light of the incident.

On Tuesday, a video of a tourist washing the buttocks of a child by the beach went viral. Their companion was seen burying what was believed to be the kid's soiled underwear.

This prompted the government to close a portion of Boracay’s shoreline for a cleanup.

“It’s offensive to the sight. It’s not a good scene,” Panelo said at a news conference.

“They have to follow rules and that obviously is a violation, so they will be subject to administrative or rather suits,” he added, referring to the foreign tourists concerned.

Panelo also called for the deployment of portable toilets to service tourists in the island.

“Parang wala ka ring puntahan kung nandoon ka sa beach. Kailangan siguro mayroong mga portable restroom there, kailangan din tulungan din natin iyong mga turista natin,” he said.

The Boracay Inter-Agency Rehabilitation Management Group has appealed to the public to cooperate in maintaining the cleanliness of the island, which was closed to tourists for six months last year to give way to rehabilitation works after President Rodrigo Duterte called it a "cesspool." — RSJ, GMA News
