U.S. finds long-lost diary of top Nazi leader, Hitler aide

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The government has recovered 400 pages from the long-lost diary of Alfred Rosenberg, a confidant of Adolf Hitler who played a central role in the extermination of millions of Jews and others during World War Two.

A preliminary U.S. government assessment reviewed by Reuters asserts the diary could offer new insight into meetings Rosenberg had with Hitler and other top Nazi leaders, including Heinrich Himmler and Herman Goering. It also includes details about the German occupation of the Soviet Union, including plans for mass killings of Jews and other Eastern Europeans.

"The documentation is of considerable importance for the study of the Nazi era, including the history of the Holocaust," according to the assessment, prepared by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. "A cursory content analysis indicates that the material sheds new light on a number of important issues relating to the Third Reich's policy. The diary will be an important source of information to historians that compliments, and in part contradicts, already known documentation."

How the writings of Rosenberg, a Nazi Reich minister who was convicted at Nuremberg and hanged in 1946, might contradict what historians believe to be true is unclear. Further details about the diary's contents could not be learned, and a U.S. government official stressed that the museum's analysis remains preliminary.

iPhone 5S review of the rumours

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is due to kick off on 10 June. And consequently, gossip about the Cupertino company’s next-gen iPhone, variously dubbed the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6, is reaching fever pitch.

While the new blower isn’t expected to launch at WWDC, that’s not stopped the rumour mill whirring into top gear. We’ve trawled the web and rounded up the juiciest morsels about the new handset. So take a peep, get clued in and impress your mates with the inside line on the iPhone 5S.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has given the clearest indication that the iPhone 5S won’t be on shelves until autumn. Speaking after revealing the company’s last financial figures, Cook said: “Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services that we can’t wait to introduce this fall.”

His words came after the web worked itself into a frenzy about Apple introducing its new handset this summer, as it did with its old school iPhone 3G and 3GS models.

The weirdest habits of the world’s most brutal dictators Part 1

Kim Jong-il

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011, had some funny habits.

According to his former chef - who spoke about in April - he liked to dine on snakes, spiders and hippo meat. He banned perfume and aftershave from his house. He drank expensive wine and whisky while his countrymen starved.

His son, current leader Kim Jong-un (shown above), loves the Beatles and wants to look like Hollywood hardman Jean-Claude Van Damme, and has the protein supplements to prove it.

Weird, perhaps, but not nearly as weird as some dictators get. Give a man total power and you give his strangest instincts free reign, as this little lot prove...

Bashar al-Assad

Leaked emails reported to be from Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, currently engaged in a bloody civil war, show him to be quite the music lover.

The emails, which sources claim are probably authentic, show that Assad bought music from iTunes, including songs by New Order and Leona Lewis.

Perhaps most disturbingly of all, Assad also purchased Don’t Talk Just Kiss, by British novelty pop act Right Said Fred.

Muammar Gaddafi

Libyan dictator Gaddafi was killed during the Arab Spring of 2011 after ruling the country with an iron and often brutal hand for the previous four decades. Naturally, he surrounded himself with a hand-picked platoon of highly trained bodyguards.

So far, so what? Well, it’s just that the bodyguards were women, made to take a vow of chastity and adorned in the traditional military garb of makeup and high-heeled combat boots. Gaddafi also had a fear of heights, which manifested itself in a refusal to climb more than 35 steps, explaining why he often lived in a tent.
After his death, one of Gaddafi’s other obsessions was uncovered, in the form of an album packed with carefully cropped photos of the former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

No deaths reported as gunmen fire on revelers, including 10-year-old girl

Gunmen opened fire on dozens of people marching in a Mother's Day second-line parade in New Orleans on Sunday, wounding at least 17 people, police said.

Police spokeswoman Remi Braden said in an email that many of the 17 victims were grazed and most of the wounds weren't life-threatening. No deaths were reported.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas told reporters that a 10-year-old girl was grazed in the shooting around 2 p.m. She was in good condition. He said three or four people were in surgery, but he didn't have their conditions.
