Manila, Philippines -- Commuters who may fall prey to “snobbish” taxi drivers in trying to catch a ride at the airport or malls this holiday season have a new hotline number to call.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) launched a new hotline for passenger complaints: 4592129.
In cooperation with the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP), the LTFRB inaugurates its new call center hotline that operates 24 hours a day and seven days a week to entertain commuter calls.
“To ensure that the public can easily report erring drivers who refuse to carry them to their destinations, overcharging and other malpractices, LTFRB signed a Memorandum of Agreement with AAP with its call 24/7, 365-day center services.”
LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez said the launching of the hotline coincided with the agency’s launching of Oplan Isnabero to crack down on erring cab drivers who discriminate passengers, negotiate fare rates, use tampered meters, and refuse to ferry passengers.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) said its law enforcers have apprehended at least 10 drivers starting December 2 for refusing to convey passengers.
“Those drivers apprehended were fined P1,700 and their driver’s license suspended for 45 days,” LTO law enforcement service director Mohammad Yusoph Lamping said.
DOTC records show that at least 22,408 taxi units are ferrying passengers in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Of this number, at least 50 percent are identified as colorum, considering the current moratorium on franchise issuance. There are at least 2,000 taxi operators that own an average of 10 units each.
