Taliban go on killing spree at Pakistan school, 132 students dead

By Jibran Ahmad and Mehreen Zahra-Malik

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - At least 132 students and nine staff members were killed on Tuesday when Taliban gunmen broke into a school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar and opened fire, witnesses said, in the bloodiest massacre the country has seen for years.

More than eight hours after militants slipped into the heavily guarded compound through a back entrance, the army declared the operation to flush them out over, and said that all nine insurgents had been killed.

Sydney gunman was 'wanted in Iran'

Iran says it requested 14 years ago the extradition of Man Haron Monis - the gunman behind the Sydney siege - but Australia refused to hand him over.

The head of Iran's police, Gen Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, told reporters that Monis was wanted for fraud at the time.

He said Monis had fled to Australia via Malaysia in the late 1990s.

Bilibid Raid

Operatives from various law enforcement agencies swooped down on the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) Monday morning and discovered illegal drugs and some items from high-profile inmates, including a hot tub and luxury watches.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, accompanied by elements of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Philippine National Police (PNP), held a surprise inspection at the national penitentiary's maximum security compound amid reports that convicted drug lords are still able to continue with their operations inside jail.

Authorities discovered six guns, a storage area, secret pathway, entertainment appliances, P1.4 million cash, and even a sauna facility inside convicted drug lord Peter Co's room.

In the room of robbery group leader Herbert Colanggo, authorities found cash and music equipment.

Colanggo told dzMM's Alex Calda that the cash seized from him were supposed to be used for a feeding program.

De Lima said at least 19 convicted and influential drug lords will be transferred to another detention cell where they would be isolated from the rest of the inmates. Their visiting privileges have also been suspended.

In a random drug testing conducted on 12 inmates, two turned out positive for drug use.

Actor Robin Williams dead from apparent suicide: police

Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead at his home in California from suspected suicide, police said Monday.

A statement from the Marin County Sheriff's Department said the 63-year-old funnyman was found shortly before midday at his home in Tiburon, northern California.

"At this time, the Sheriff's Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia," the statement said.

According to US media reports, the veteran actor had been battling depression.

One of the most beloved American entertainers of his generation, Williams rose to fame in the iconic US television sitcom "Mork & Mindy".

He later reeled off a string of big-screen hits, which included 1987's "Good Morning Vietnam", where he played a motormouth US military disc jockey, 1989's "Dead Poets Society" as a maverick English teacher and 1997's "Good Will Hunting" which earned him a best supporting actor Oscar.

Spurs beat Heat 104-87 in Game 5 to win NBA title

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Tim Duncan and Tony Parker won titles in their second seasons. Manu Ginobili was a champion as an NBA rookie.

Success came so quickly and frequently for the Big Three, but San Antonio couldn't keep it up after winning its last title in 2007. And just when the Spurs were on the verge of being back on top again last year, the Miami Heat practically snatched the rings right off their fingers.

So when they finally celebrated again Sunday, players wrapping themselves in flags from around world in a reminder that the Spurs look far beyond the border to build champions, Parker had no trouble deciding where to rank this title.

Neymar fires Brazil to comeback victory

Neymar was the star of the show as Brazil came from behind to secure a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Croatia in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup™. The hosts’ star No10 equalised after Marcelo’s own-goal, and converted a second-half penalty after Fred had been fouled by Dejan Lovren.

Croatia had the ball in the net before the end of the game, but Ivica Olic was adjudged to have fouled Julio Cesar in the build-up, and Oscar made sure of the victory late on.

The opening goal of the 2014 World Cup was remarkable in itself, the first own-goal scored by a Brazilian in the history of the tournament. Ivica Olic received the ball on the Croatia left and ran unopposed into the Brazilian half. His low cross fizzed across goal and was turned in by Marcelo, who failed to readjust his feet in time. Ivan Perisic was ready to pounce if the Real Madrid man had not made the final touch.

The crowd were stunned, but they rallied behind their side, who were level before the half-hour mark. Oscar worked hard to regain possession for Brazil in the middle of the park, before passing the ball to Neymar. The Barça man skipped free of a Perisic challenge, steadied himself, and fired hard and low with his left foot across Pletikosa. The ball rebounded off the post, nestled into the back of the Croatia net and the Arena de Sao Paulo erupted.

The remainder of the first half saw Brazil dominate possession, with Croatia looking dangerous on the counter-attack.

After more Seleção pressure in the second-half, the hosts went ahead. The ball was played into the box towards Fred, who tried to swivel to hit it towards goal. He was impeded by Lovren and the referee pointed to the spot. Neymar stepped up, delayed his run-up, and hit hard to Pletikosa’s right-hand side. Croatia’s No1 got a hand to it, but could not stop it putting Brazil ahead.

Despite a valiant effort by Croatia, including their disallowed goal, Brazil wrapped up the three points when Oscar fired home from the edge of the box.

Mysterious celeb deaths

Mysterious celeb deaths

The Los Angeles Coroner's Office ruled Brittany Murphy's death to be accidental - attributed to multiple-drug intoxication, pneumonia and iron-deficiency anemia. But her dad did not go by it. He pushed further and further toxicology reports showed presence of 10 heavy metals above the high level set by WHO.

Heath Ledger was found dead by his masseuse and housekeeper one afternoon. The star was naked and unconscious on the floor in his house when he was found. There were pills scattered all around. Was it an accident or suicide?

Jim Morrison died of a heart attack in a Paris bathtub. No autopsy was done. Did he overdose on drugs? Was there foul play? Did he even die?

Yuck! the Germiest Thing on Airplanes (It Isn't What You Think it Is)

Your chances of getting a cold may go up as much as 20 percent when you board a plane, thanks to dried-out mucous membranes and sneezy people who leave germs on tray tables (where those little buggers can live for up to 72 hours). But now, a new study has revealed that there's one place on planes that germs seem to love....

...your seat-back pocket. Researchers from Auburn University tested how long antibiotic-resistant MRSA and E. coli bacteria could live in an airplane under typical travel conditions. They observed the bacteria on six surfaces: an armrest, a tray table, a metal toilet handle, a window shade, and both cloth and leather seat pockets.
